The Christ Hospital Health Network in Cincinnati has been recognized with three achievement awards from the American Heart Association for its efforts to reduce heart disease and stroke risks. The awards were given for improving management of high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, and blood pressure.
The hospital received the Check. Change. Control. Cholesterol™ Gold Award, the Target: Type 2 Diabetes Gold Award, and the Target: BP™ Gold Level recognition, which is jointly presented by the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association.
John Szawaluk, MD, cardiologist and Medical Director of the Resistant Hypertension Clinic at The Christ Hospital Health Network, stated that "high blood pressure continues to be a leading risk factor of heart disease and stroke." He emphasized that their work in reducing stroke and heart attack risks is crucial to their mission.
Jennifer Wick, PharmD, MPH, BCACP Assistant Director of Pharmacy for Ambulatory Services at The Christ Hospital Health Network, highlighted the importance of early detection in treating high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes. She noted that their pharmacy program collaborates closely with primary care offices to ensure patients receive necessary treatments to mitigate fatal heart attack or stroke risks.
Cardiovascular disease remains a leading cause of death in those with Type 2 diabetes. A survey conducted by The Harris Poll revealed that only half of individuals aged 45 and older with Type 2 diabetes recognize or discuss their risk for heart attacks or strokes with healthcare providers.
