A snow emergency has been declared for the City of Fort Wright, starting from 1:00 pm on January 5, 2025. The emergency will remain in effect until further notice due to warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS) about severe winter weather conditions. These conditions include heavy snowfall, freezing temperatures, and strong winds that could lead to low visibility or even whiteout situations. Travel is expected to become difficult this evening and into the following day.
Residents are advised that all on-street parking is prohibited during this snow emergency. Vehicles left parked on public streets may be ticketed or towed as they pose a hazard to emergency vehicles and delay road treatment efforts. Residents are urged to park their vehicles off-street immediately.
Kenton County is also under a Level I snow emergency, indicating hazardous road conditions with blowing and drifting snow. Freezing temperatures are expected to make roads, bridges, and overpasses icy.
The winter weather is forecasted to continue through Monday, January 6, 2025. Residents are advised against traveling unless absolutely necessary during this period.
Fort Wright Public Work Crews will be actively working throughout the event despite limited staffing. They manage over 100 streets totaling nearly 80 miles of roadway, including some state roads like KY 17, Highland Pike, and Dixie Highway.
Residents are encouraged to prepare for severe winter weather by checking batteries in flashlights and radios, charging cell phones fully, stocking up on water and non-perishable food items, ensuring generators function properly if available, and assisting elderly neighbors or those at risk.
