The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute has received top recognition from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), earning three 3-star ratings, the highest possible, for its cardiac surgical outcomes. These ratings were awarded in Mitral Valve Repair and Replacement (MVRR), Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG), and Overall Combined Cardiac Surgery categories.
Dean Kereiakes, MD, Chairman of The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute, emphasized the significance of these ratings: “The STS 3-star rating is one of the most rigorous and respected quality indicators in healthcare.” He added that achieving this level across three major categories demonstrates the team's commitment to excellence in cardiac care.
The newly introduced overall multiprocedural category by STS saw The Christ Hospital earning a 3-star rating immediately, placing it among the top 8% nationwide. Geoff Answini, MD, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at The Christ Hospital, noted that this national recognition reflects their teamwork and pursuit of excellence: “Our goal is simple: deliver the safest, most advanced heart surgery with the best possible outcomes for every patient.”
J. Michael Smith, MD, Medical Director of Cardiovascular and Mitral Valve Surgery at The Christ Hospital’s Mitral Valve Program, highlighted their use of robotic-assisted surgical techniques to enhance patient recovery. Dr. Smith stated: “Our robotic approach has revolutionized mitral valve repair,” noting benefits such as smaller incisions and shorter hospital stays.
