Surgeons at The Christ Hospital Health Network have performed the first transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) procedure using the Abbott MitraClip G5 system in Cincinnati. This new device is designed to treat mitral regurgitation, a condition where the heart’s mitral valve does not close properly and blood leaks backward into the left atrium. The MitraClip G5 is delivered through a catheter inserted via the femoral vein and works by clipping together part of the mitral valve leaflets to reduce blood backflow.

“Once again, our talented structural heart team at The Christ Hospital Health Network continues to lead the way in the latest innovative treatments for heart patients in Cincinnati,” said Dean Kereiakes, MD, FACC, MSCAI, Chairman of The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute. “We have again been first to introduce a potentially life-saving therapy to Cincinnati. I am extremely proud of our talented team of doctors, nurses and technicians who do everything it takes to improve the lives of our patients.”

Mitral regurgitation can result in severe symptoms and complications if untreated, including heart failure. For patients unable to undergo standard surgical treatment, options were previously limited to medications that manage symptoms but do not stop disease progression.

“This is a tremendous achievement for the entire team at The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute,” said Puvi Seshiah, MD, who led the procedure. “MitraClip G5 offers physicians easy handling, precise positioning and intuitive deployment that enables both higher control and efficiency. This makes the procedure quicker, safer and more effective. The Christ Hospital continues to innovate and work with the latest technologies to give heart patients the best outcomes. We look forward to providing this procedure to other patients that need it in the Greater Cincinnati region.”

The FDA recently approved Abbott’s MitraClip G5 TEER system.

The Christ Hospital Health Network operates an acute care hospital in Mt. Auburn as well as a location in Liberty Township, eight outpatient centers and many medical offices throughout its service area. With more than 1,300 physicians and over 7,200 employees, it has served its community for 135 years. U.S. News & World Report recognized it as the top hospital in Cincinnati Region; Newsweek also named it among World’s Best Hospitals for 2025.
