Every day, the Kenton County School District transports about 10,000 students on its buses. The district's Transportation Department and bus drivers are responsible for ensuring that children get to and from school safely.
The district is asking community members to help keep students, drivers, and others safe by following several safety rules related to school buses and pedestrians. Drivers are reminded to stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus when its red lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended. This rule applies whether approaching from behind or from the opposite direction on an undivided road.
Motorists are also urged to slow down in school zones and watch for students walking or crossing streets, as well as obeying crossing guards. State law requires stopping for pedestrians at all street corners and crosswalks, regardless of whether they are marked.
Patience is encouraged when encountering buses on the road. The district notes that bus routes are important for the community, so drivers should allow extra time during their commute if traveling through school zones.
Additional information about bus safety can be found through resources provided by the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) and the Office of Highway Safety. These materials are available for free download on the KDE School Bus Safety webpage: https://education.ky.gov/school/bus/Pages/default.aspx.
"Thank you for making school bus safety and safe driving practices a priority in our community," said the district.
