On September 5, providers and staff at The Christ Hospital Health Network's Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) marked several milestones in patient care, particularly for those experiencing cardiogenic shock. The CVICU reported a survival rate for cardiogenic shock patients treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) that is 10% higher than the international registry average.
The unit has reached key achievements, including the implantation of 900 Impella pumps to support blood flow through the left side of the heart as a temporary solution. Additionally, more than 360 adults have received ECMO treatment for severe heart or lung failure. The team has also completed 400 Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantations and performed 51 heart transplants.
During an event held at the Mt. Auburn campus's heart tower, a former patient shared their experience after spending a month in the CVICU on temporary heart pumps due to acute heart failure. This patient has since returned to physical activities such as working out and scuba diving.
Miriam Freundt, MD, FACC, FACP, Director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit and Director of the ECMO Program, said: “Our talented team of doctors, nurses and advanced care providers continue to create exceptional outcomes for some of our sickest cardiovascular patients. As Cincinnati’s heart hospital, this community knows they do not need to travel for impeccable heart care. As our LVAD, ECMO and transplant programs continue to grow, we continue to be the destination for care not just in the region but in the country.”
The Christ Hospital Health Network includes an acute care hospital in Mt. Auburn, another location in Liberty Township, five outpatient centers, and numerous medical offices across the region. With over 1,300 physicians and 7,200 employees serving its mission to improve community health by providing quality outcomes affordably, it has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as Cincinnati's top hospital and was included on Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals list for 2025.
