Juan B. Umana, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon recognized internationally, has joined The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute in Cincinnati and is now seeing patients. Dr. Umana completed his medical degree at Universidad de Los Andes in Bogota, Colombia, with a minor in biomedical engineering. He went on to complete his residency and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, where he received both the Seal Family Fellow Award and the Clinical Excellence Award.
"I am incredibly excited to join The Christ Hospital Health Network and contribute to its legacy of excellence in cardiovascular care and innovation," said Dr. Umana. "I’m also fortunate to be working with one of my mentors, Dr. J. Michael Smith, who has been instrumental in leading the way in cardiac surgery. Heart surgery requires a relationship built on trust, and I look forward to building that with the community of Greater Cincinnati.”
Dr. Umana was influenced by his father’s volunteer work during medical mission trips from an early age and intends to continue focusing on individualized patient care as well as strong clinical outcomes. He is board eligible with the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
“We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Umana join our award-winning heart team here at The Christ Hospital Health Network,” said Dr. Smith. “His expertise will help bring a level of skill and sophistication to our cardiac surgical program. I have no doubt he will take the heart & vascular institute to new heights and improve the outcomes of our patients in Greater Cincinnati.”
The Christ Hospital Health Network includes an acute care hospital in Mt. Auburn, another hospital location in Liberty Township, eight outpatient centers, and numerous medical offices throughout the region. The network employs over 1,300 physicians and more than 7,200 staff members across its facilities while serving Greater Cincinnati for more than 135 years.
The organization was named #1 hospital in the Cincinnati Region by U.S. News & World Report and appeared on Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals list for 2025.
