Research conducted at The Christ Hospital Health Network indicates that patients with shoulder arthritis and bone loss experience improved function following shoulder replacement surgery. This study, published in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, is a collaborative effort involving The Christ Hospital, the Cincinnati Shoulder & Elbow Fellowship, and the Carl and Edyth Lindner Research Center.

Advanced shoulder arthritis often involves glenoid bone loss, posing challenges for physicians during shoulder replacement surgeries. The study examined five-year clinical and radiographic outcomes for a specific type of socket replacement used in total shoulder replacement surgeries.

The findings reveal that patients reported reduced pain and enhanced overall shoulder function five years or more after surgery. During this period, patients maintained functional improvements without requiring additional surgeries.

“This cutting-edge technology shows the innovation that The Christ Hospital Health Network, through the Carl and Edyth Lindner Research Center, can provide to patients, not just in Cincinnati but across the country, suffering with shoulder pain related to arthritis,” stated Paul Favorito, MD. Dr. Favorito is an orthopedic shoulder surgeon at The Christ Hospital Health Network and one of the lead authors of the study. He added that their research builds on a previously published study with two years of follow-up data. “Our research team will continue to follow the patients to answer the questions that they all ask; how long will my shoulder replacement last?”

Dennis DeBernardis, DO; Dave Donnelly, PA-C; and Aditya Bahel, DO were key contributors to this research effort.

The Christ Hospital Health Network includes an acute care hospital in Mt.
