CINCINNATI – The Christ Hospital Health Network and Mayfield Brain & Spine have announced a collaboration to enhance the stroke program at The Christ Hospital. This partnership aims to develop an interventional stroke program that will allow Mayfield neurosurgeons to perform endovascular thrombectomies at the hospital's Mount Auburn location.

A thrombectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove blood clots from the brain during an acute ischemic stroke. The agreement between the two organizations focuses on training and technology necessary for these procedures, with the goal of elevating The Christ Hospital's Stroke Center designation to a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center as recognized by The Joint Commission.

Brian Colley, Executive Director of the Musculoskeletal Service Line at The Christ Hospital Health Network, stated, “We are thrilled to announce our partnership between Mayfield Brain & Spine and The Christ Hospital Health Network.” He emphasized their commitment to providing innovative treatments for patients and communities served by both organizations.

Mayfield Brain & Spine, known for its independent neurosurgery practice, has established similar agreements with other health systems in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. Dr. Andrew Ringer, a neurosurgeon and stroke specialist at Mayfield, noted their efforts in expanding a network of thrombectomy-capable centers across the region. “We look forward to working with the stroke and critical care teams at The Christ Hospital,” Dr. Ringer said.

The collaboration also involves diagnostic angiograms, which help identify blockages in blood vessels of the head and neck. Completion of these procedures will enable The Christ Hospital to apply for Thrombectomy-Capable designation from The Joint Commission.

Dr. Michael Robinson from Mayfield highlighted the impact of successful endovascular thrombectomies: “A successful endovascular thrombectomy can save patients’ lives and also preserve speech and function.”

Mayfield neurosurgeons will work alongside various medical professionals at The Christ Hospital including emergency department nurses, ICU staff, hospitalists, and acute care nurses.

The Christ Hospital Health Network includes multiple facilities across Cincinnati offering comprehensive healthcare services. Recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the top hospital in Cincinnati Region in 2025, it continues its mission of improving community health through exceptional outcomes.

Mayfield Brain & Spine was founded in 1937 and is renowned for treating brain tumors, spinal deformities, strokes among other conditions related to brain and spine disorders. It was named one of Cincinnati’s "Best Places to Work" by Cincinnati Business Courier in recent years.
