The Christ Hospital Health Network has introduced a new robotic surgical system for prostate cancer, becoming the first hospital in the region to use the Da Vinci Single Port (SP) system. This advancement comes as September marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time when health professionals encourage men to learn about screening and treatment options.
Prostate cancer is the second most common form of cancer among men, following skin cancer. According to recent data, one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. The disease occurs more often in older men and non-Hispanic Black men. Improvements in early detection and treatment have led to a significant decline in mortality rates; between 1993 and 2013, the death rate from prostate cancer was reduced by half.
The newly adopted Da Vinci SP system enables surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures through a single incision. This technology reduces hospital stays for patients undergoing surgery for urological conditions such as prostate cancer. Unlike traditional multi-port robotic surgeries that require two to four days of hospitalization, most patients treated with this system are able to return home on the same day.
“Our introduction of the Single Port robotic system represents a significant advancement in minimally invasive surgery,” said Justin Cox, MD, Urologist at The Christ Hospital Health Network. “This technology allows us to offer our patients unparalleled precision, faster recovery times and better outcomes, positioning us at the forefront of surgical innovation in Cincinnati.”
Screening methods for prostate cancer include the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam (DRE). The PSA test measures levels of a protein produced by cells in the prostate gland, while DRE involves physical examination by a doctor for abnormalities.
“Prostate cancer can be detected early even before you may show symptoms,” Brian Mannion, MD, medical director of oncology services at The Christ Hospital Health Network said. “Your doctor will recommend screening based on your age, health, risk factors and family history. Treatment options may include surgery or radiation and are two widely used routine options.”
The Christ Hospital Health Network includes an acute care hospital located in Mt. Auburn, another hospital site in Liberty Township, eight ambulatory outpatient centers and many medical offices throughout the area. The network employs over 1,300 physicians and more than 7,200 staff members. In 2025 it was recognized as the top hospital in Cincinnati by U.S. News & World Report and was included on Newsweek’s list of World’s Best Hospitals.
