The Christ Hospital Health Network has completed the first implantation in Ohio of the Topaz transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR) system. This marks only the sixth such procedure in the United States. The surgery was conducted as part of an early feasibility study at the Carl & Edyth Lindner Center for Research and Education within The Christ Hospital Health Network.
The Topaz TTVR System is intended to treat tricuspid regurgitation using a minimally invasive approach. It features a two-stent valve prosthesis delivered via catheter through the femoral vein, allowing it to replace a diseased tricuspid valve without open-heart surgery.
Dr. Santiago Garcia, Director of Structural Heart Program and Harold C. Schott Endowed Chair in Structural Heart Disease, performed the case with Dr. Puvi Seshiah, interventional cardiologist, and their team.
“This new device is a gamechanger for those with tricuspid regurgitation,” said Dr. Garcia. “The simple and fast procedure creates a low impact on cardiac electrical conductions pathways. Research and clinical trials like this are the reason we continue to be the heart destination in the region. We are excited to be the first in Ohio to offer this groundbreaking implant to heart patients.”
According to Dr. Seshiah, “This is a tremendous achievement for the entire team at The Christ Hospital Heart & Vascular Institute. The Topaz TTVR System offers easy handling, precise positioning and intuitive deployment. The Christ Hospital understands the importance and value to work with the latest technologies to give our heart patients the best outcomes in the Greater Cincinnati region.”
The Christ Hospital is one of eight sites nationwide participating in this early feasibility study aimed at achieving future FDA approval.
The Christ Hospital Health Network operates an acute care hospital in Mt. Auburn, another hospital location in Liberty Township, multiple outpatient centers, and numerous medical offices throughout its service area. The network includes more than 1,300 physicians and over 7,200 staff members who focus on delivering affordable care with strong outcomes across their community services.
In 2025, U.S News & World Report ranked The Christ Hospital as #1 in Cincinnati Region hospitals, while Newsweek included it on its list of World’s Best Hospitals.
